VANDEGRIFF--At the residence of his parents in Carrollton, La., on Thursday, November 13, 1884, William D. Vandegriff, a native of New Iberia, La., born

August 5, 1869. Deceased was the son of our friends and former neighbors, Dr. and Mrs. J. B. Vandergriff, whose bereavement will excite much regret and sympathy in this community. William was a good boy, who bade fair to grow up an honorable and useful man, but Providence decreed otherwise, and his young spirit has been called to eternal rest. His illness was congestion of the brain, which resulted fatally in the short space of forty hours. May his sorrowing parents, brothers and sisters assuage their grief with the conviction that their loss has been his gain and that his guileless soul has found a happy home in heaven.

He held several important positions in the medical corps during General Butler's occupation of the city. After the war he went to Lafayette and practiced medicine, and when the yellow fever epidemic of 1878 spread it's terrors through the state he was sent to Donaldsonville by the Howard Association where he did valiant service. In 1883 he returned to New Orleans, and in 1892 was appointed president of the board of pension examiners by President Harrison.

He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Anaise Montaux (Aspasie Montault), and from which union three children survive - John B. Vandergriff, Mrs. L. P. Lobre and Mrs. B. Dronen (Mrs. E. Derouen). His second wife was Miss Emily Derbonne, of Natchitoches, who, with their eight children survive him--Mrs. N.
